				<title>Hull &amp;amp; East Riding Sports Club prepares for centenary</title>
				<description>2010 will mark the centenary of sport being played on the present site of the Hull and East Riding Sports Club on Chanterlands Avenue North in Hull.

Members of the Hull Zingari Cricket Club bought the six and a half acre site in 1910 when Chanterlands Avenue North was a cinder track known as Salt Ings Lane and Goddard Avenue and Kirkham Drive were yet to be built. Zingari were formed in 1896 and are the city's oldest cricket club.

Their first grounds were rented at Haworth Arms, Newland Homes and Hull YPI Ferens. Initially cricket, rugby union, tennis and ladies lacrosse and hockey were played on the new ground until Zingari handed over the land to the newly-formed Hull and East Riding Amateur Athletic Company Limited in 1920 in exchange for shares in the new company of which 8000 were issued at &amp;pound;1 each.

The present clubhouse was built in 1937 at a cost of &amp;pound;6000. The name was changed to the Hull and East Riding Sports Club and the club became a registered charity in March 2005 and is home to the Hull Badminton Club (the oldest badminton - only club in the country, formed in 1912), the Avenue Badminton Club, Hull Zingari Cricket Club, the Hull and East Riding Squash Club, the East Riding Badminton Club, Sculcoates Amateurs Football Club and the White City Road Running Club and a strong social members section. Combined membership, junior and senior, is just over 800 and growing but membership of all clubs and the social club is open. Ring 342156 for more details.

To mark the ground centenary, Hull Zingari have arranged a President's XI against an Old England side managed by Jim Parks, former Sussex and England player, on Sunday 11th July 2010 with the East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band and support from Kingston Veterinary Services, CJ Covers, Landplan, Kall Kwik Printing, Hull University Staff House and Willow Sports (Bradford). Entry and car parking will be by ticket only and full details will be announced early in the New Year.

Last year the Hull Badminton Centre received a grant of &amp;pound;456,000 from Sport England and brokered by England Badminton to completely refurbish the badminton hall and this has given the sport a big boost in this area and beyond. The club has built disabled access and toilets and now wish to become DDA fully compliant with proposals to build a new ladies changing block to include disabled facilities at a cost of &amp;pound;250,000 and the new block would replace outdated changing rooms on the first floor which make sport for disabled girls/women very difficult.

In addition to this Hull Zingari CC and Sculcoates Amateurs AFC intend setting up new girls sections to increase the number of women playing sport in the area. Grant support has been received so far from the WA Horncastle Charitable Settlement, the Sir James Reckitt Charity, the Hull and East Riding Charitable Trust and Hull City Council (Wyke Area Community Initiative).

Further donations can be sent to: The Grant Appeal, Hull and East Riding Sports Club, Chanterlands Avenue North, Hull HU5 4ED.

				<title>Hull Wyke ARLFC ensure volunteers are CRB checked</title>
				<description>Hull Wyke ARLFC ensure new volunteers are in compliance with current child welfare regulations.

Following on from their Clubmark Gold award last month, Hull Wyke ARLFC held a CRB evening in conjunction with the RFL in order to ensure their new influx of volunteers were in compliance with current child welfare regulations.

Suzanne Jackson hardworking CWO for Hull Wyke said, &quot;In preparation for the 2010 mini-mod season, and to support the coaching staff of our 100 mini-mod players and 25 Cubs, we are keen to ensure that everyone involved with the youngsters has been CRB checked. The RFL, (David Raybould in particular) have been really supportive throughout the whole process however, we have more volunteers who couldn't make it on the night therefore another session will take place soon.

We also have many of our volunteers booked to attend the &quot;Safeguarding and Protecting Children&quot; course in the New Year, again, an important part of our child welfare compliance. In addition to the safeguarding course, we will also be delivering an &quot;in house&quot; Touch Line Marshall course in the New Year to ensure we have additional match-day cover throughout the mini-mod and winter league teams.

Our aim is to have all our volunteers educated on safeguarding issues in order to ensure our Club remains a safe, effective and child friendly environment.

As a Club we fully support and endorse the Child Welfare initiatives, and believe they enhance the Club's constitution and future success.&quot;

				<title>Great turn out for awards ceremony</title>
				<description>Region's professional and amateur sporting heroes turned out for an awards ceremony to remember last night

Some would say he should have been knighted by now for his services to the region's amateur football league.

More than 300 members of the city's sporting community watched 82-year-old Wally Owst, of Bransholme, north Hull, be crowned winner of the Diamond Award, the top accolade at the glittering Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Sports Awards ceremony which was hosted at Hull City Hall last night.

&quot;I have been involved with the Sunday football league since 1953,&quot; said Mr Owst, who is still secretary of Hull and District Sunday Football league today, which has in its time been the largest amateur football league in Europe thanks to his tireless devotion. &quot;I am still doing it now and it's fantastic. It's a very nice surprise to win this award, I think it's wonderful.&quot;

Organised by First Hull Trains and KCFM 99.8, the awards were launched for the first time at the Queen Victoria Square-based venue, in Hull city centre, this year to recognise the passion and dedication people demonstrate for sport in the region. A total of 11 awards were presented at the ceremony and included some awards being presented to the city's professional players, including Hull KR's Shaun Briscoe being named Sports Personality of the Year.

Professional sporting stars - including the likes of Hull City AFC player Nicky Barmby, Hull KR Coach Justin Morgan, Hull FC captain Lee Radford and Hull Stingrays player Lee Esders, along with a number of their fellow players - converged on the event alongside amateur clubs from across the East Yorkshire region to celebrate sporting achievements.

David Townend, sales and marketing manager for First Hull Trains, said: &quot;The awards ceremony was incredible, it did just what we set out to do - to recognise just how passionate people are about sport in this city.

&quot;Of course, none of it would have been possible without the support of our sponsors and we can't thank them enough for getting involved. We are already starting to think about plans for next year's event!&quot;</description>

				<title>GB sitting volleyball player 'beyond words' after being nominated for prestigious sports award</title>
				<description>A sitting volleyball player from Withernsea has been named a finalist for the Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards, due to be held at Hull City Hall later this month.

Martin Chapman, 43, who plays sitting volleyball for Great Britain, has been nominated in the Talented Amateur Disabled Performer category of the sports awards, which has been launched for the first time this year by First Hull Trains and KCFM 99.8.
Mr Chapman said: &quot;After I was involved in an accident, I thought it was the end of everything - I had played volleyball previously and I managed to get back into the sport.
&quot;It's a relatively new sport in the UK but I've been playing for the national squad for two years now and I really enjoy it. It's a competitive sport and I'm playing at a top level.&quot;
Mr Chapman will join the other sports awards finalists on Thursday, November 26 at the prestigious awards ceremony at Hull City Hall, which will be attended by both amateur and professional players, allowing aspiring athletes to rub shoulders with some of Hull's top sporting professionals.

&quot;I'm literally beyond words,&quot; he added. &quot;Rob Richardson, who nominated me, is one of the top three players of sitting volleyball in the country, so for him to recognise my effort and achievement is just unbelievable.
&quot;I really feel incredibly lucky. My proudest moment to this day was the first time I pulled on a GB shirt and that feeling never goes away, every time you wear your shirt you know you're representing your country. It's a great feeling.&quot;
Although Mr Chapman works as a tutor for East Riding College, he is incredibly dedicated to his sitting volleyball training, travelling to Lincoln five days a week to practice and fundraises the &amp;pound;500 a month it costs him to train at international level.
David Townend, First Hull Trains' sales and marketing manager, said: &quot;We had an incredible response to this year's sports awards - all of our nominees were of a very high calibre, so it was incredibly difficult for the judges to shortlist the finalists. Martin has done very well to be a finalist in the sports awards, but it goes without saying that his dedication to sitting volleyball is phenomenal.
&quot;The ceremony itself looks set to be an evening to remember, tickets are selling fast. Table seats are already completely sold out with only balcony seats available now. We are offering the remaining tickets at a special price of four for the price of three, so that everyone can have an opportunity to meet the region's sporting heroes.&quot;

&lt;strong&gt;To book a balcony ticket, which is priced at &amp;pound;10, visit Hull City Hall Box Office or call (01482) 226655.&lt;/strong&gt;

The glittering event, which is being held at the Queen Victoria Square-based venue, in Hull city centre, on November 26, will be attended by both professional sporting stars from Hull's four major sports teams - Hull Kingston Rovers, Hull FC, Hull City AFC and Hull Stingrays - and representatives from amateur clubs across the East Yorkshire region.

Organised by First Hull Trains and KCFM 98.9, the Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Sporting Heroes and Champions awards is already proving to be a huge hit, with table tickets selling out weeks before the event.

Now, organisers are making people aware that only balcony tickets are left with a special offer price of four tickets for the price of three.

David Townend, sales and marketing manager for First Hull Trains, is looking forward to the award ceremony. <title>East meets West</title>
				<description>East meets West as local sporting heroes come face to face for first time before glittering awards ceremony

They have dedicated their lives to two very different sports, boxing and cricket. Now, two East Yorkshire sportsmen are meeting for the first time thanks to one common sporting interest.
Sean Ross, 29, who runs East Hull Amateur Boxing Club, and Mike Ullyatt, 69, who is a life member of Hull Zingari Cricket Club, have both been shortlisted as finalists in the Hull and East Yorkshire Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards.
The prestigious awards initiative was launched for the first time this year by train operating company First Hull Trains and local radio station KCFM 99.8. It will culminate in a glittering ceremony at Hull City Hall on November 26.
The awards were launched to recognise the passion and dedication people in the region demonstrate for sport. East Hull Amateur Boxing Club has been shortlisted for the Amateur Club of the Year category. Mr Ross launched his Shannon Road-based boxing club, in Longhill, East Hull, in January 2008 and now has 101 amateur boxers over the age of nine right through to adults registered there.

&quot;I come from a big family as do most people who live near me,&quot; explained the Longhill born and bred boxing trainer, who started boxing at the age of 10 and knows how important it is to train regularly.
&quot;Kids round here want to achieve individual success rather than being part of a team, which they already have in effect at home - boxing is the only sport that truly lets them do that. I am currently fundraising to renovate an old church into a more suitable training facility than where we currently train, I have been doing it since December.
&quot;Before I set the club up, I saw 50 kids just stood outside the shops on the estate and I thought to myself that something had to change - and it really has worked. We've had huge success at the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) championships both regionally and nationally. The club has had a far bigger impact than I ever thought it would, it has benefitted some of our younger boxers' lives even when it comes to their education. Boxing disciplines, dedicates and focuses people on what they are doing in life.&quot;
Meanwhile, Mr Ullyatt, who started playing for Hull Zingari Cricket Club in 1979, has dedicated most of his life to his sport and is a finalist for the Services to Sport Award.
&quot;My wife would certainly say I have dedicated my life to cricket,&quot; he joked. &quot;I have retired from my role as junior development manager now, but still remain very heavily involved with the club. We have 80 junior players at the club and hope to launch a girls' team soon.&quot;
The club is steeped in history, having been founded in 1896 and based in Chanterlands Avenue, West Hull, for 100 years next year. &quot;I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing the kids enjoy it,&quot; added Mr Ullyatt, who lives in Willerby.

&quot;I have seen lots of players come up through the junior teams to our current senior teams, so it goes to show how important the development of the juniors is. I am also managing our region's Chance to Shine project, which is part of a national initiative aimed at bringing competitive cricket back into schools - we do six schools a year and we're currently in the fourth year of the project.&quot;
Mr Ullyatt and Mr Ross are set to meet for the first time to share stories about their diverse sporting memories outside the Queen Victoria Square-based venue, city centre, where the awards ceremony is due to take place in a few weeks.
The awards, which are set to become an annual event, saw nominations opened in August and nominations flooded in to the extent that the original deadline was extended to allow everyone sufficient chance to apply.
With more than 100 nominations submitted, the contenders for the awards have been described by event organisers as outstanding, creating a difficult job for the judges.
David Townend, sales and marketing manager at First Hull Trains, has been impressed with both the quantity and quality of nominations received. He said: &quot;We've had an incredibly high calibre of entrants this year, Sean and Mike are real proof of that, and I think it's going to be a very close competition. The audience will definitely be sat on the edge of their seats and I would encourage people to come and show their support.&quot;
All tables for the awards event have sold out already, although a few places remain in the gallery area. Tickets cost &amp;pound;10 and can be booked by calling (01482) 226655, with all proceeds from the evening being donated to the KCFM Smile Foundation.
